Sensitive Skin Care

Sensitive skin is delicate and difficult to look after and a sensitive skin care routine needs to be very delicate on your skin. Sensitive skin is usually easily irritated, and reacts to adverse weather conditions, changes in temperatures, sunshine, perfumed products, and harsh ingredients such as detergents. The resulting dryness, blotches and rosy patches require careful management. Look for sensitive skin care products especially designed for sensitive skins – these will not contain perfume and irritants.

Time and patience taken over the selection of sensitive skin care and beauty products really does pay off. Specialized products cost no more but do contain active ingredients to keep sensitive skin comfortable and protected from harmful irritants and the elements.

Do not use soap and water or facial washes on delicate skin, as they strip out moisture and oils, making the skin even more sensitive. Choose a light, un-perfumed cleansing lotion, followed by a splash of warm water to remove any excess lotion. Avoid toners too, as they dry the skin, so causing further problems.

Use a creamy moisturizer specially designed for dry, sensitive skin, and be sure to apply it both morning and night for the maximum benefit.

Use soap free cleansers to prevent sensitive skin becoming irritated and blotchy. Soap makes delicate skin more sensitive by removing oils and moisture. Super-fatted cleaners are less drying but can leave behind a residue that blocks pores. Steer clear of toners, and simply rinse off excess cleanser with warm water, or use rose or cucumber water.

Delicate skin can be allergic to some beauty and skin care product ingredients. Choose light, non-perfumed moisturizes formulated for sensitive skin. Many known allergens, active ingredients and perfume will be removed to avoid irritation. Some products are preservative free, so check that products are not past their sell-by date.

It’s best to start a sensitive skin care treatment very slowly: cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and sun block. You don’t want to exfoliate right away; just these four initial things help heal the skin. In many ways, achieving creamy skin is a joint process between patient and doctor. A beautician can observe a women’s face when she’s in the examining room, but once she returns home, she has to keep track of the way she’s responding to each topical treatment she uses. That’s the way we ascertain which products are having a beneficial effect.

After we’re sure that these four basic components aren’t causing any problems (this takes about one week), it’s then best to apply a mild AHA cream every other day and slowly increase to twice-daily use over the next six weeks.
